About This Activity

Scaling the Jagged Black Steps of Gianyar's Favorite Cascade

I remember the first time I saw a picture of Kanto Lampo—it didn't even look like a real waterfall. Instead of a single vertical drop, the water spreads out across this massive, terraced wall of pitch-black volcanic rock, creating a beautiful curtain of white mist. When you get down into the canyon itself, the view is even better than the photos suggest. It’s highly visual, energetic, and one of the most accessible canyon spots on the island, which means you get all the wild jungle atmosphere without having to commit to a brutal multi-hour survival hike.

The Easiest Trek in the Region

Getting down to the water is a breeze compared to most Bali waterfalls. You’ll just stroll down a flight of well-maintained concrete steps for about five to ten minutes, passing by a couple of small local stalls selling cold drinks. The stairs lead you directly into a lush, narrow riverbed. The unique shape of Kanto Lampo is actually tied to a local irrigation dam upstream that overflowed years ago, redirecting the water over these stepped cliffs and creating the marvel we see today. Because the water breaks over so many rocky ledges, the sound down here is an awesome, continuous roar that completely drowns out the outside world.

Getting the Shot and Getting Wet

If you want to experience this place properly, you have to get into the river. The water is usually only chest-deep at most, but the current can be surprising, and the riverbed rocks are notoriously slick. This is where the local village guys come in—they stand out in the water all day, helping visitors balance on the big boulders and pointing out exactly where to stand for the best lighting. They are absolute wizards with a smartphone camera and will gladly orchestrate a mini-photoshoot for you. Just make sure to slide them a nice tip for keeping your phone dry while you pose under the spray!

Not at all. The water at the base of the rocks is quite shallow, generally ranging from knee to chest depth depending on the season and exactly where you stand, making it ideal for wading rather than swimming.

You can climb onto the lower tier of rocks for a photo, but be incredibly careful. The black rocks are covered in slick moss and algae. Always listen to the local guides stationed in the river who know which steps are stable.

There aren't formal high-security lockers, but there are basic changing rooms and a small station near the riverbed where you can keep your dry clothes. It is best to bring a waterproof dry bag for your phone, wallet, and camera gear.

Because it’s so close to Ubud and very easy to access, it gets incredibly busy between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM. If you want to avoid a queue just to stand on the main photo rock, aim to arrive before 8:00 AM.

During intense downpours, the water volume increases dramatically and can turn a muddy brown color. If there has been a massive rainstorm the night before, the current might be too strong for wading, so check local conditions first.
