Let’s head out east and uncover the deep, royal history of Bali.
If you want to escape the busy southern beaches and dive headfirst into Bali’s living history, majestic architecture, and spiritual landmarks, this is the route for you. We’re traveling all the way to Karangasem and Klungkung, where the island's ancient kingdoms left behind incredible palaces and traditions that are still very much alive today. It’s a beautifully scenic drive with some of the most iconic views on the island.
From Heaven’s Gate to Royal Gardens
We’ll start bright and early to make our way up to the famous Lempuyang Temple. Known worldwide for its spectacular 'Gate of Heaven' framing Mount Agung, standing between those towering white candi bentar split gateways as the morning sun lights up the valley is a magical experience. Next, we’ll drive down to the coast to explore Taman Ujung Water Palace. Built by the last King of Karangasem, this massive complex features gorgeous stone bridges, grand European-influenced pavilions, and sweeping views of the ocean. It honestly feels like walking through a royal dream.
Ancient Culture and Historic Courtrooms
After lunch, we’ll step into a literal living museum at Tenganan Village. This is home to the Bali Aga—the island’s original, pre-Hindu inhabitants. You’ll see unique walled compounds, watch weavers create the rare double-ikat 'geringsing' fabric, and experience a timeless way of life. Finally, on our journey back south, we’ll make an evening stop at Klungkung Palace to see the historic Kertha Gosa pavilion. This ancient royal court of justice features incredible traditional Kamasan-style ceiling paintings that tell vivid stories of karma and spiritual law. It’s the perfect historical wrap-up before we drop you back at your hotel.
As one of Bali's holiest temples, a strict dress code applies. Both men and women must wear a sarong covering their legs, and shoulders must be covered. A rental sarong is usually included with your entry shuttle tickets up top, but it's a good idea to wear a t-shirt or bring a light scarf to wrap around your shoulders.
Lempuyang Temple is incredibly popular for photography, and the queue for the famous Gate of Heaven photo can get quite long later in the day. Starting early helps us catch the best morning light over Mount Agung and keeps our schedule smooth so we can enjoy the palaces without rushing.
Tenganan is an ancient 'Bali Aga' village that preserves a distinct culture predating the Majapahit kingdom influx. They follow unique laws, architectural layouts, and craft traditions found nowhere else on the island, including the world-famous double-ikat weaving technique.
Lempuyang involves a steep ride up on a local shuttle bus followed by walking up some inclines and steps to the main temple area. Taman Ujung and Klungkung Palace involve easy, flat walking across paths and bridges. Tenganan Village is a gentle walk on uneven cobblestone paths. It's totally manageable for all fitness levels, but comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
Yes, absolutely! There are great local restaurants and cafes with stunning rice field and ocean views located between Taman Ujung and Tenganan Village. Our driver guide will happily give you a few excellent recommendations based on what you’re in the mood for.
